Take Back Your Thoughts

A recent study from Queen’s University in Canada revealed that the average person has more than 6,000 individual thoughts each day. Imagine that—most of these thoughts are internal, never shared aloud. This truth underscores just how important it is to be mindful of what we’re thinking.
Our thoughts take root in our hearts and, over time, take form in our lives.
Now, imagine that you are the result of your thoughts. Does that resonate with you? Do you feel limited or stuck? Do you feel weak or not good enough? Are you living as though there’s a glass ceiling over your potential?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, don’t worry—you are in good company. I’ve been there, too.
Here’s the beauty of it: We can replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Yes, it’s easier said than done, but even one baby step can make a world of difference. It’s about becoming aware of the thoughts that swirl in our hearts and reshaping the language we use to describe ourselves and our lives.
I’ll never forget when my pastor pointed out something that changed my life. He noticed that my immediate response to nearly every request was, “I can’t.”
I can’t lead prayer because I don’t sound like everyone else.
I can’t lead this effort because I’m too young—who would listen to me?
I didn’t realize how much my own language was holding me back.
But awareness was the first step. The more I noticed my limiting words, the more opportunities I had to change them. Over time, “I can’t” stopped being my default response. It took years of work, but I’ve learned to speak differently—to think differently—and it has made all the difference.
Take a moment to be still. Let your thoughts come to the surface. Write them down, no matter how messy or painful they may feel. Tears may flow, and that’s okay—it’s all part of the cleansing process. Whatever negative thoughts emerge, make the conscious decision to change the narrative.
We must police our thoughts, take authority over them, and be mindful of what we allow to influence us. The conversations we have, the music we listen to, the content we consume—all of it fuels our souls. Choose words, messages, and influences that bring life and encouragement.
It starts with one step. Darling, take it. You’ve got this.
Heartwork:
Sit quietly for a few minutes and reflect on the thoughts that arise. Write them down without judgment.
Identify one negative thought and replace it with a positive affirmation. For example, replace “I’m not good enough” with “I am more than capable.”
Commit to speaking life over yourself daily. Track your progress and celebrate your growth.
